Blood Buffer - Treating Alkalosis/Acidosis

Treating Alkalosis and Acidosis

Mild acidosis or alkalosis can often be treated by eliminating the root cause. Considering our examples from the previous page, this would simply mean reducing the amount of diuretics taken or forcing the person to rest.

In extreme cases, intravenous injections of weak acids or bases may be performed. Bicarbonate (basic) solutions are used for patients experiencing extreme acidosis and ammonium chloride (acidic) solutions are used for those with extreme alkalosis.
