Reaction 16

magnesium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid

Milk of magnesia, used to settle an upset stomach, is a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water. It settles the stomach by neutralizing some of the excess acid that often causes stomach pain and heartburn. Hydrochloric acid (shown in the first tube of the right picture) is a colorless solution. A small amount of methyl red indicator has been added (shown in the second tube). Methyl red is red in acidic solutions and yellow in basic ones. The yellow color of the last tube, to which a spoonful of Milk of Magnesia has been added, demonstrates its acid neutralizing ability.
