Determining the Best Solvent

Determining the Best Solvent

The best solvent is the one that best separates the components of the mixture within a reasonable amount of time. The definitions of "best" and "reasonable" will vary depending on the situation. Three solvent systems (combinations of solvents) were tried in this experiment. Each one was developed for 1.5 hours.

ethanol-water
(2:1 ratio)
butanol-methyl ethyl ketone
-water-ammonia
(5:3:1:1 ratio)
butanol-ethanol-ammonia
(1:1:1 ratio)

After examining the results of each chromatogram, determine which solvent was the best and then check to see if you have chosen the correct one.
