Density - Determining Mass

Determining Mass

To determine the density of a substance requires that both the mass and the volume be determined. The mass of a substance can be determined using a digital balance. The balance used in this experiment reads in grams to the hundredths place (two decimal places). Only on the rare occasion of using a clean, dry object should the object to be weighed be placed directly on the balance. In the picture below the location of the decimal point is emphasized with an arrow.

More detailed information about weighing objects can be found in the lab techniques section.
