Enzyme Kinetics - Catalase

Catalase

Catalase is an enzyme found in many types of cells, but has its highest concentrations in the liver, kidney and red blood cells. Catalase decomposes hydrogen peroxide by the reaction:

2 H2O2 2 H2O + O2

The rate of enzyme activity can be monitored by measuring the rate of hydrogen peroxide consumption or measuring the rate of oxygen gas formation. The higher the rate of hydrogen peroxide loss or oxygen formation, the higher the enzyme activity. In this experiment we will be collecting oxygen by water displacement and calculating the rate in mls/sec.
