Functional Groups - An Example Unknown

An Example Unknown

A student was assigned an unknown and attempted to identify it. Starting at the top of the flowchart, he performed the KMnO4 test. It was negative, indicating that the compound was an alcohol, alkane or ketone. Next he performed the dinitrophenylhydrazine test. It was also negative, indicating that he had either an alcohol or alkane. When the cerric nitrate test was performed on the compound, it was also negative, indicating an alkane. He then examined the list of possible unknowns he was given and used the boiling point of the compound to determine which of the alkanes on the list was his unknown.
