Functional Groups - Postlab Questions

Postlab Questions

1. For each unknown you were assigned give its identity and provide support for your choice.

2. Using the tests in this experiment, would you be able to distinguish between each of the following compounds if they were given to you as unknowns? Explain your answers.

a.

b.

3. Give the structure for one compound (not from the possible unknown list) that would be indistinguishable from propanal using the tests in this experiment.

4. Consider the two functional group tests below. Would it be beneficial to include either of these tests in this experiment or would they provide information that duplicates that already available?

a. Tollens Test - gives a positive result for aldehydes but not for ketones
b. Lucas Test - distinguishes between 1o, 2o, and 3o alcohols.

5. Brady's reagent is a solution that produces a precipitate when it reacts with compounds containing carbonyl groups. Brady's reagent was used in this experiment. By what name is it called in this experiment?

6. The Hinsberg Test is a functional group test much like those in this experiment. It gives a positive test for the first two of the compounds shown below, but not the third. For which functional group does it test?

This completes the experiment.
