Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of Two-Year Colleges. Here at Harper, the Phi Phi chapter has been active for over 30 years. Students who have at least 12 credit hours at Harper and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 are invited to join, and new members are welcomed during our induction ceremonies each fall and spring. Our chapter works to serve our communities, Harper, Chicagoland, and the world. Each fall, we run a food drive to help those in need over the holidays. Last spring, we also ran a book drive to support colleges decimated by Hurricane Katrina. Previous activities have ranged from fund-raisers for medical research to volunteer work at a local nature reserve.
Phi Theta Kappa also provides scholastic opportunities in the form of local and national conventions. In addition, PTK members are eligible for many transfer scholarships.
Our chapter meets (with the Honors Society folks) every Wednesday afternoon, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., in room L-329. Please see the "Meetings" link on this website for info regarding the Honors Society's pre-arranged discussion/debate topics.
From time to time we will also have PTK-only meetings on TUESDAYS, at 3:30 p.m., in room L-300; but again, our Tuesday meetings will take place not every week but, intead, every three weeks or so. We'd love to see you at a PTK-only meeting on a Tuesday afternoon, but if you wish to come to one of our Tuesday meetings, please contact Professor Garcia to learn when the next one will be.
(Students should be aware that PTK and The Honors Program
are different. Participating in Honors at Harper does not
make you a PTK member. You must pay a national and a local
membership fee to join Phi Theta Kappa. If you have questions,
please contact John
Garcia at [847] 925-6402.)
