The Bromine Test
Shows positive test for:
alkanes, alkenes and phenols
Reactions:
reacts by substitution with alkanes
reacts by addition to alkenes
reacts by substitution with phenols
How to perform the test:
1% bromine solution (in methylene chloride) is added dropwise with shaking to 10 drops of the compound to be tested.
Indications of a positive test:
The red-brown color of the bromine solution disappears. Phenols also produce HBr gas, which can be detected using moist blue litmus paper.
