Density - Example 2
Question: Determine the density of the nuts below using the data provided.
One nut is placed on a balance pan (left) and then the second one added to the pan (right).
A small amount of water is added to a graduated cylinder (left). One of the nuts is added (middle), and then the second nut added (right).
Answer: The mass of the first nut is 15.84 g. The mass of the second nut is 15.76 g (31.60 - 15.84). The volume of the first nut is 2.1 ml (11.8 - 9.7). The volume of the second nut is 2.2 ml (14.0 - 11.8). The calculated densities are then:
The density should be reported as the average of these two, or 7.35 g/ml.
