Density - Postlab Questions

Postlab Questions

1. Prepare a table to summarize the density data you collected.

2. The accepted values for the densities of aluminum, lead and copper are 2.70, 11.34 and 8.94 g/ml, respectively. You determined the density of a cylinder composed of one of these metals. Calculate the percent error in your determination.

3. In the experiment you determined the mass of a stack of ten pennies, the volume of a stack of ten pennies and the density of a stack of ten pennies. What is the average mass, average volume and average density of a single penny?

4. Legend has it that Archimedes, a Greek Mathematician, determined that a jeweler had cheated King Hieron the 2nd by creating a crown not made from pure gold as he had claimed. If given a piece of "pure gold" jewelry, explain how you might determine if this is really the case.

5. You have the penny density values for each of years between 1980 and 1989. Prepare a graph of density versus year. You should observe a discontinuity in the data. Identify between what two years the discontinuity occurs and propose an explanation for it.

This completes the experiment.
