What Is Cultural Competence?

Cultural Competence is moving beyond mere acceptance or tolerance, to a deeper and genuine appreciation of cultural differences; and interacting effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. This should be viewed as a continual process and not a place that one arrives.

How Can I Assess Where I Stand?

Four Stage Diversity Appreciation Process:

  1. Cultural Awareness: an awareness of your own cultural biases and the effects they may have on yourself and others (diverse groups).
  2. Cultural Acknowledgement: the act of acknowledging the differences that exist between individuals, races, and entire cultures, and viewing those differences as positive or negative.
  3. Cultural Acceptance: valuing cultural differences and similarities, and viewing the differences as positive.
  4. Cultural Action: the process of recognizing differences and responding to them in a positive manner; it represents an advanced step in the process of becoming culturally competent.
